June is the Gateway to Summer

Garden book author Jean Hersey

"June is the gateway to summer" wrote garden book author Jean Hersey in her 1964 release of "A Sense of Seasons". Indeed, as our San Diego May Gray shifts into June Gloom, we glimpse the approach of the blue skies of summer, heralding in celebrations, cook-outs, vacations, pool parties, and beach reads. June is also the gateway to LGBTQ+ Pride season. San Diego was one of the first cities to initiate gatherings in 1970, following the Stonewall Inn uprising of June 28, 1969. The reading lists regarding these events are extensive and there a few new titles to add this year:

George Takei book It Rhymes With Takei.

One Day In June book

The Joy and Defiance of Marsha P. Johnson book

Fairyboy book

Super Gay Poems book

Juneteenth 2025: Freedom, Resilience, Community

"Juneteenth is a significant date in American history and the African American experience. The name is a play on the date of June 19th, 1865. On that day, the Union Army made its way into Galveston, TX under the leadership of General Gordon Granger, and he announced to the people of Texas that all enslaved African Americans were free." - Mary Elliott, Curator of American Slavery, National Museum of African American History and Culture.

As our communities celebrate Freedom Day, let us look forward to the work remaining to be done and support each other in the work.

Opportunity Drawing for Mystery Gift Bag

Bluestocking Books is continuing our May Birthday Opportunity Drawing into June. Donate a book to either of our ongoing Book Drives, and you will be entered for an opportunity to win a gift bag of books tailored to your favorite genres. Read on for details!

Bluestocking Books has two ongoing book drives. Our longstanding Reach Out and Read Book Drive benefits tiny tots infant-5 years old who participate in the NICU Program at UCSD.  At regular pediatric check-ups, Baby receives a book from their physician and parents learn the myriad benefits of reading to their little one, from growing social skills to preparing for school and a future of reading and learning. And of course, reading increases our capacity for compassion and wisdom. True fact! We have a variety of appropriate new books in English, Spanish and bilingual titles.

Our newest book drive benefits incarcerated folks in California. In partnership with SDSU, Books for Prisoners ensures that as many prisoners as possible receive the books that they request, which are often reference books such as dictionaries. New or gently used paperbacks are acceptable. Donate a book, find something here in the shop, or special order a favorite book which has changed your life. You may be changing the life of someone who is ready to turn the page and start a new chapter.
