Sentimental Books - A Piece of You

Mary Lyons reading Dog Man at Bluestocking Books.

Bluestocking Books associate Mary Lyons serves up a slice of literary life in her essay -

Sentimental Books - A Piece of You

Recently on a family text thread, my niece Haley told us (her sister, my brothers, her other aunt, my parents) that she had created A Room of Her Own in her new home and had a bookshelf which didn't have enough books. Imagine that! (I couldn't.) Finding a booklover with a sparse bookshelf - unless they are an excruciatingly disciplined minimalist - is like finding a rabid cat lover who doesn't already have three to five cats - who doesn't even have one cat! (For the record, Haley has seven cats.)

My niece asked us a question which will always warm the hearts of older generations: what books do you love which you recommend to the people you love? Well, actually Haley said it best:" I want to add some sentimental books to my collection to have a piece of each of you." The responses flowed in on the text thread --

Ashley (her sister): "I mean, Dracula or Dorian Gray. At the Mountains of Madness by H.P. Lovecraft."

AJ (her other aunt): "The first that came to mind was a book that G'ma read to me: The Shining. I remember being around 12 years old and plopping right down in front of her while she was reading and asking ‘what's going on in this chapter?’ She would read and I was riveted. (I knew that Joy/G was cool, but reading Stephen King to your 12-year-old daughter? That is badass.)"

Her dad (my brother): " Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance. Mary, can you find me a copy?"

Nana (my mom): "The Heaven Tree Trilogy. I cry every time I read the last 40 pages. It's so beautiful." (My mom is a gentle soul, but she is also very practical. She doesn't just cry willy-nilly like some people. A sentimental choice indeed.)

Next up my brother Mike mentioned reading The Stand over Christmas break 1976, and soon enough Haley was talking about tearing through The Exorcist.

I watched from the sidelines and realized that, like some of my family members, I have a macabre taste in books. Don't get me wrong, I have many kinds of favorite books, not just one or two titles. But the books that were blaring their car horns to get noticed in this company would not be ignored: Memento Mori by Muriel Spark and The Night Side of the River by Jeanette Winterson. Both are creepy, both have elements of the supernatural nudging up against the day-to-day reality of real humans and their hopes, dreams, and foibles. Both authors are great stylists. Both books leave an impression which resonates for me.

Somehow, I couldn't share these titles - my recommendations - in the text thread. I waited a few days and chimed in: "Haley, I'm going to send you a couple books."

It feels a little bit like choosing a very favorite book for a book club. I don't want to talk about it. I don't want to introduce the book - I don't want to have to explain why I love it or justify why I picked it. I certainly don't want anyone to tear it apart. It's like poetry when it's obscure - I don't want to have to explain what it means, take a test, or break it down word by idiom. Can't I just love it and share it with you?

A customer brought her daughter to the bookshop to pick out and share some of her favorite books while she could. She wanted her daughter to have a vast array of books to get to know her mom even better in the coming years. I have to admit, I got choked up. Our customer, with her beautiful smile and amethyst eyes comforted me and told me it would all be alright. I think she was right. She was sowing the seeds of a conversation her daughter could continue to have with her. She was writing the future, and some of her favorite authors were guiding her pen.

If you love a book - really treasure it - you don't have to protect it from the scoffs and misreads of the reading public, you owe it to your most important people to share it. If it works out, they will invite it to dinner. They hear its stories, watch its manners at the dinner table, love or tolerate the way it laughs, then decide if they will never ever invite it in again or welcome it into their home with open arms and remember its favorite drink. I don't even like Muriel Spark as a person. At least, I don't think I do. But I will invite in anything she has ever written.

Leaving any bookstore is hard, especially on a day in August...

Jane Smiley reading book at the 2010 National Book Festival Teens and Children Tent

"Leaving any bookstore is hard, especially on a day in August when the street outside burns and glares, and the books inside are cool and crisp to the touch..." is part of a longer quote from an older Publisher's Weekly essay by Jane Smiley regarding the worth of a bookstore. We at Bluestocking Books are in agreement and invite you into our literary sanctuary for a late-summer browse to find that last beach read before school is fully back in session and autumn and winter holiday planning takes precedent. If you would like to read one of Jane Smiley's books, check out the selection of paper options on Bookshop.org and audio on Libro.fm.

June is the Gateway to Summer

Garden book author Jean Hersey

"June is the gateway to summer" wrote garden book author Jean Hersey in her 1964 release of "A Sense of Seasons". Indeed, as our San Diego May Gray shifts into June Gloom, we glimpse the approach of the blue skies of summer, heralding in celebrations, cook-outs, vacations, pool parties, and beach reads. June is also the gateway to LGBTQ+ Pride season. San Diego was one of the first cities to initiate gatherings in 1970, following the Stonewall Inn uprising of June 28, 1969. The reading lists regarding these events are extensive and there a few new titles to add this year:

George Takei book It Rhymes With Takei.

Juneteenth 2025: Freedom, Resilience, Community

"Juneteenth is a significant date in American history and the African American experience. The name is a play on the date of June 19th, 1865. On that day, the Union Army made its way into Galveston, TX under the leadership of General Gordon Granger, and he announced to the people of Texas that all enslaved African Americans were free." - Mary Elliott, Curator of American Slavery, National Museum of African American History and Culture.

As our communities celebrate Freedom Day, let us look forward to the work remaining to be done and support each other in the work.

Opportunity Drawing for Mystery Gift Bag

Bluestocking Books is continuing our May Birthday Opportunity Drawing into June. Donate a book to either of our ongoing Book Drives, and you will be entered for an opportunity to win a gift bag of books tailored to your favorite genres. Read on for details!

Bluestocking Books has two ongoing book drives. Our longstanding Reach Out and Read Book Drive benefits tiny tots infant-5 years old who participate in the NICU Program at UCSD.  At regular pediatric check-ups, Baby receives a book from their physician and parents learn the myriad benefits of reading to their little one, from growing social skills to preparing for school and a future of reading and learning. And of course, reading increases our capacity for compassion and wisdom. True fact! We have a variety of appropriate new books in English, Spanish and bilingual titles.

Our newest book drive benefits incarcerated folks in California. In partnership with SDSU, Books for Prisoners ensures that as many prisoners as possible receive the books that they request, which are often reference books such as dictionaries. New or gently used paperbacks are acceptable. Donate a book, find something here in the shop, or special order a favorite book which has changed your life. You may be changing the life of someone who is ready to turn the page and start a new chapter.

As full of spirit as the month of May...

King Henry IV Part 1 & 2 by William Shakespeare book.

"As full of spirit as the month of May, and as gorgeous as the sun in Midsummer", said King Henry IV while gazing upon the young royalists in William Shakespeare's play.

Happy Anniversary to Bluestocking Books!

At Bluestocking Books we are certainly feeling full of spirit this May Day as May 1, 2025 marks the 26th year since Kris Nelson purchased this bookstore from Joseph Tabler and renamed the shop Bluestocking Books. The origins of the bookstore location at 3817 Fifth Avenue go back to a time when a Greek immigrant set up shop as Otento books. Mr. Otento started his book business on Robinson Avenue and moved into our current storefront in 1967. The wooden bookshelves were installed by Mr. Otento and his antiques dealing friend and are still holding strong!

Adding to our joy is a story from a visitor to Bluestocking Books a couple of weeks ago. The visitor and her mother shared that when they were vacationing in Costa Rica, they found one of our distinctive blue bookmarks featuring artwork by Richard T. Reyes in a book left by another traveler. They vowed to visit the book shop when they made it to San Diego. They were thrilled to see a stack of the matching bookmarks in the store! We are thrilled to know the bookmarks are making their way around the world. Where have you left or found a Bluestocking Books bookmark? Let us know in the comments.

San Diego Book Crawl Wrap-Up

The three-day San Diego Book Crawl in celebration of the 12th annual Independent Bookstore Day has wrapped! A BIG thank you to all the booklovers who crawled with us and the other 13 bookstores April 26, 27, & 28th. We are already making plans for 2026!

Bluestocking Books delighted in spending some time with children's book author and illustrator Susie Ghahremani while she signed her books to be sold during the Book Crawl. A house favorite is "Rosemary Long Ears". Based on a true tale, Rosemary is a Bassett Hound who manages to attract detritus from the streets to her fur like a magnet as she strolls with her humans.

San Diego Book Crawl 2025 logo creator Kaley McCabe rode on one of the event shuttle buses on Saturday and was kind enough to sign copies of her Nightmare Before Christmas books, "Welcome to Halloween Town" and "The 13 Days of Halloween: Jack's Spooktacular Countdown!" when she arrived at Bluestocking Books.

We also had books on hand from IBD ambassador Dave Eggers, including "Soren's Seventh Song", about a singing young humpback whale, and "Moving the Millers' Minnie Moore Mine Mansion", a true story from the state of Idaho.
